Autofit is a feature in PowerPoint that automatically adjusts the size of your text as you type, to ensure it fits within the text box or placeholder. This feature is designed to maintain the overall aesthetic of your slides by preventing text overflow. Autofit is available in two modes: ‘Shrink text on overflow’ and ‘Resize shape to fit text’.
‘Shrink text on overflow’ minimizes the font size when the text exceeds the placeholder’s capacity. It stops shrinking when the font size reaches a minimum limit, set by PowerPoint, to ensure readability.
‘Resize shape to fit text’ enlarges the text box or placeholder to accommodate more text. This mode maintains the font size but alters the shape’s dimensions.
To enable or disable Autofit, follow these steps:
- Right-click on the text box or placeholder and select ‘Format Shape’ from the context menu.
- Go to the ‘Text Box’ tab in the ‘Format Shape’ pane on the right.
- Under ‘Autofit’, choose your preferred setting: ‘Do not autofit’, ‘Shrink text on overflow’, or ‘Resize shape to fit text’.
Autofit is a handy tool for maintaining the visual balance of your slides. However, it’s also important to manually check your slides after typing. Excessive text can lead to small, hard-to-read fonts or disproportionately large shapes. Aim for concise, impactful text to keep your slides attractive and engaging.
